PRACTICALITIES

Paraguay is a hot country, particularly in December to February. In June to August there can be some cold days, though the weather is very variable and most days are more like a British summer. There is no rainy season as such, but when it comes rain is usually in the form of thunder storms. The Hotel has air conditioning and heating of the “Split” type in all the bedrooms.

There is a health centre at the corner of the square in Santa María and a hospital in San Ignacio, within 20 minutes reach. We are not in a malaria area and it is not necessary to take anti-malaria tablets. Injections for hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and yellow fever are advisable. Mosquito control is normally only needed at night, and we provide precautions in the form of mosquito nets, plug-in mosquito repellents, and fans.

The voltage locally is 220V (the same as Europe, different from the USA).

HOW TO GET THERE

Paraguay is a land-locked country in the middle of South America, and one of the poorest nations in the continent. To reach Santa María you fly to the Paraguayan capital Asunción, changing planes either in São Paulo Brazil, or in Buenos Aires Argentina. From the Bus Terminal in Asunción there is one bus a day direct to Santa María, the Mariscal López (leaving at 11.45 am), but many buses all through the day pass through nearby San Ignacio, on the major road Ruta 1 which runs to Encarnación on the southern border of Paraguay. We can meet you in San Ignacio and it is only 15 minutes by taxi to Santa María.

FLIGHTS TO PARAGUAY

For anyone travelling from the UK, two possible travel agents are Journey Latin America, and Key Travel: both have good experience of arranging flights to and from Paraguay.

Journey Latin America, 020 8747 3108, sales@journeylatinamerica.co.uk marked for the attention of Chris Rendall Dunn.

Key Travel, 0161 819 8935, reservations@keytravel.co.uk marked for the attention of Susan Couch.

Do not forget to arrange visas if you are coming from anywhere other than the EU. If you have been in the last 3 months in any country which has yellow fever, you should strictly speaking be prepared to show a yellow fever certificate when you enter Brazil (for Iguaçu airport) though in practice it is unlikely you will be asked to do so.

We expect everyone to take out travel insurance in their own countries, before travel.
