A Tour of Asuncion

Many tour companies do a two or three hour “Cititour” in a bus, but it is more fun to explore on foot. Here is a two or three hour walking tour you can make, beginning and ending at the Pantheon.


Plaza de los Heroes

1. Pantheon (where national heroes are buried)

2. craft shops in Plaza de los Heroes (outdoor stalls behind Pantheon)

4. Plaza Uruguaya (big square with bookshops in it, beware of thieves and prostitutes)

5. Railway station / Estación de Ferrocarril (old choo-choo trains)

6. Café Literario (very nice café for a fruit juice)

7. Catedral (nothing worth seeing inside)

8. Statue of Juan de Salazar with sword (founder of Asunción, 15 August 1537)

9. Monument to Marzo Paraguayo (student martyrs of 1999, demonstrating for democracy)

10. Cabildo (former Senate building, now a pleasant museum)

11. View over Bañado from first floor (slums of the poor, sometimes flooded by the river)

12. Statue of Mariscal Lopez (who led Paraguay into war and destroyed the nation, regarded as hero)

14. Palacio Lopez, also known as Palacio de Gobierno (grandiose design by Mariscal Lopez, now government offices) no visits inside
